Until 2013, I served as Alaska State Archaeologist and Deputy SHPO. I have BA and MA degrees in anthropology from the Univ. of Tennessee, over 40 years in archaeology, and certifications in forensic hair and fiber microscopy, SCUBA, marine survival, HAZWOPER, and historic preservation. I helped to bring marine archaeology to Alaska through partnerships to investigate several of Alaska’s historically important shipwrecks. As a police instructor and adviser to the State Medical Examiner, I helped to solve some of Alaska’s most gruesome crimes. I hold a federal appointment as forensic anthropologist for DMORT Region 10. As a grant recipient, I am involved with international projects in Alaska and Russia. I live in Anchorage with my wife Patty and our great Danes. With a 2nd home in Wisconsin, I am listed by the Wis. Historical Society as (1) Qualified Skeletal Analyst, and (2) Qualified to Conduct Archaeological Work within the Boundaries of a Human Burial Site and Excavate Burials.
