Register Sponsors Capitol Hill Reception to Kick-off Celebration of 50th Anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act and 100th Anniversary of the National Park Service!

On January 5, 2016, supporters of historic preservation gathered on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. to launch the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act and 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. The reception was held during the annual conference of the Society for Historical Archaeology (SHA), and SHA was a reception co-sponsor, along with the Register, AECOM, the American Institute of Architects, Versar, and the American Cultural Resource Association.  One hundred and eighty (180) SHA members, Congressional members and their staff, representatives from national historic preservation organizations, and federal agency staff attended the reception, which was held in the Kennedy Caucus Room, in the Russell Senate Office Building. During the reception, Register President Terry H. Klein awarded the 2015 John F. Seiberling Award to Senator Martin Heinrich of New Mexico and Congressman Christopher Gibson of New York. The John F. Seiberling Award was established in 1986 in the name of Ohio Congressman Seiberling, for his many legislative efforts in support of historic preservation. The award recognizes significant and sustained efforts in historic preservation and the conservation of archaeological resources by an individual or group.

During the SHA conference business meeting, President Klein also awarded the Register’s Charles R. McGimsey III – Hester A. Davis Distinguished Service Award to Dr William B. Lees. The Register’s Special Achievement Award was given to the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center of Cortez, Colorado.
