Core Reduction Technologies Workshop
September 19 @ 8:00 am - September 20 @ 5:00 pm
Instructor: John L. Fagan, Terry L. Ozbun, Meghan Johnson
This two-day workshop emphasizes hands-on production and analysis for a series of core reduction technologies. Participants will develop skills in recognizing five specific core reduction technologies: unidirectional, multi-directional, bipolar, blade, and biface. Each core reduction technology has its own core maintenance and rejuvenation techniques that are recognizable from diagnostic attributes. In addition, analysis of stages of reduction, as well as the tools used in the reduction of cores will be examined. Participants will have opportunities to examine tools (including cores) and debitage, observe the production of flakes, and engage in hands-on experimental reduction using various core technologies. Attendees will produce their own study collection of diagnostic cores and debitage and learn how to set up their own experimental lithic studies. This program enhances an archaeologist’s ability to meet the RPA code of conduct and its standards of research performance through acquiring additional expertise and methodologies to interpret the archaeological record and understand past cultures and behavioral patterns. These lithic technology analysis methods are commonly needed in archaeology due to the abundance of flaked stone lithic materials at pre-contact archaeological sites.
