    FCS is seeking a Senior Archaeologist to join our expanding team in Northern California. The Senior Archaeologist will be responsible for preparing project proposals, conducting Phase I assessments, performing records searches and field surveys, consulting with Native American tribes, communicating with clients and lead agencies, conducting Phase II/Phase III testing and data recovery, field monitoring, managing teams of field monitors, preparing Phase IV monitoring reports, curating collections, and preparing written documentation of cultural resources studies and impact assessments adherent to California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and/or Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Solicits and reviews Request for Proposals (RFP) from clients and lead agencies to determine project needs for cultural resources evaluations and prepares project-specific proposals for the appropriate cultural resources compliance documents
    • Conducts records searches in conjunction with the California Historical Resources Information System (CHRIS) Information Centers (IC) and reviews regional literature, historic maps, historic aerial photographs, and assessor parcel information
    • Performs field surveys, assembles and manages larger survey teams when necessary, collects and analyses data, and records resources in the appropriate Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) forms
    • Carries out field work, consultation, and reporting requirements specifics for various lead agencies including, but not limited to: local city and county lead agencies under CEQA; state lead agencies such as California Department of Transportation (CalTrans); and federal lead agencies such as United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and Bureau of Reclamation
    • Authors and reviews Phase I and Phase II Cultural Resources Assessments (CRA), cultural resources components of Initial Studies (IS) or Environmental Impact Reports (EIR), Historical Property Survey Reports (HPSR), and Archaeological Survey Reports (ASR)
    • Prepares Data Recovery Programs (DRP) for projects requiring Phase II testing or Phase III excavation
    • Conducts Phase II and Phase III investigations to lead agency standards, which may include, but is not limited to: site delineation and GIS/GPS mapping, artifact plotting, drawing site sketch maps and taking field photos, surface collection, excavating Shovel Test Probes (STP), excavating Test Units (TU), recording depth and strata levels with off-set measurements, soil screening and sampling, artifact labeling and packaging, preparing artifact catalogs, artifact and assemblage analysis and interpretation, and artifact curation
    • Authors and/or reviews Phase II testing and Phase III excavation reports, with all pertinent field data included and analyzed, to lead agency standards
    • Attends pre-construction meetings with contractor, client, lead agency and interested tribal parties in order to determine pre-established Mitigation Measures (MM) or Conditions of Approval (CoA) for grading or excavation projects requiring cultural resources monitoring
    • Prepares Mitigation Monitoring Plans (MMP), Paleontological Resource Impact Management Plans (PRIMP), and Unanticipated Discovery Plans (UDP), as needed
    •  Conducts and/or manages cultural resources monitoring and records resources in the appropriate Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) forms, conducts additional Phase II testing or Phase III excavation if needed
    • Educates clients about compliance with cultural resource regulations, advises clients on options to minimize impacts on known cultural resources, and recommends courses of action based on regulatory compliance and professional interpretations
    • Authors and/or reviews Phase IV monitoring close out reports, with all pertinent field data included and analyzed, to lead agency standards
    • Assists in marketing FCS cultural resources services as well as participates in marketing and business development activities
    • Assist in monitoring staff’s workload, schedules, project budgets, and participates in screening and interviewing prospective candidates for technical staff positions in the Cultural Resources Management Division

    • Expertise in MS Word, Excel and Adobe Acrobat with familiarity in MS Access
    • Reliable transportation to travel to project sites and meetings as needed
    • Familiarity with Deltek Vision a plus. 

    Education and Experience

    • Bachelor of Science/Arts degree in Archaeology, Paleontology, or Architectural History. M.A. preferred. 
    • Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a professional Archaeologist (SOI Qualified)
    • Experience supervising laboratory and/or field crews
    • Expertise in northern California Archaeology or Paleontology with recognition among the regional scientific community, and general knowledge of the other Cultural Resources disciplines
    • Familiarity with information resources in the scientific community, including other archaeologists and paleontologists, college and university programs, research centers and libraries, and data repositories
    • Expertise with sections relating to cultural resources in the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the California Public Resources Code (PRC), the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, the Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA), the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), and the Mitigation Guidelines of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontologists
    • Understands field work, consultation, and reporting requirements specifics for various lead agencies including, but not limited to: local city and county lead agencies under CEQA; state lead agencies such as California Department of Transportation (Caltrans); and federal lead agencies such as United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and Bureau of Reclamation (USBR)

    Work Environment

    The position operates in both a professional office (currently 100% remote) and outdoor settings relating to archaeological fieldwork. Staff should be equally comfortable in both environments.

    Physical Demands

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

    Physical requirements for the position include the ability to lift 50lbs., use archaeological equipment for digging, sifting, sorting, etc. Ability to hike uneven terrain over distances in excess of 5 miles.

    Responsibilities largely include construction monitoring, but may also include pedestrian survey, site mapping and recording, excavation, and other duties as assigned.

    Minimum requirements include a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in Anthropology or other closely related field, successful completion of an archaeological field school or field methods course at an accredited university in the United States, and at least 1 year of full-time professional experience. The position will be based in our Rocklin office.

    Regional travel is required, mostly within Northern California. Registered Professional Archaeologists (or ability to become certified as such upon hire) are preferred.

    Wages are based on level of education, relevant experience, and quality of references. Duration of projects expected to span 3-4 months. These are temporary non-benefited positions.

    The team at the Archaeological Research Institute is in search of a Public Education and  Outreach Coordinator. We are in search of a team member that is passionate about our  organization’s mission and vision of getting the public informed and involved in archaeology,  and specifically local archaeology.     1. Develop ARI archaeological/historic/natural sciences educational programs for a variety  of audiences: Student Interns, Volunteers of all ages, Students k-12, and Visitors 2. Develop archaeology-based educational materials (e.g., learning exercises and lesson  plans for students; training workshops and support materials for teachers) for use in K-12  classes; 

    3. Develop written educational materials for print and internet dissemination to share  research findings with general audiences (such as programs, guides, hand-outs,  workbooks and brochures) 

    4. Lead tours, experiences and speak at public events 

    5. Work with partners in the community and tri-state area to create educational  programming that meets educational state and institution goals 

    6. Attend and coordinate ARI outreach opportunities locally, regionally, and nationally

    • Experience developing teaching and educational outreach materials

    Preferred qualifications: 

    Graduate degree in anthropology, archaeology, education, history, public history,  museum studies, public relations, communications, or the advantageous  combination of two or more of these disciplines.  

    Experience with archaeological field work, lab work, and research methodologies are  extremely desirable 

    Have very strong verbal and written communication skills, and must demonstrate  experience and aptitude in dealing with various public audiences.

    Aspen CRM Solutions has an opening for a single position for a drone pilot/archaeology crew member.  The position is in support of cultural resource survey, site documentation, and report preparation for a variety of Section 106 and Section 110 projects on federal, state, and private land in New Mexico, and of aerial mapping and photogrammetry for CRM and other industries.

    The company has an existing UAV (drone) program that it wishes to expand with additional clients, particularly cultural resource managers but also those in the natural resource, solar energy, and other fields.  The successful applicant will have the skills necessary to take the program the next step, including self-motivation, the ability to work well both independently and as a member of a team, an interest in and drive to stay up to date on new technology, and the ability and initiative to successfully market the program and generate new clients.  The applicant should have:

    •     Familiarity with fixed wing and rotary crafts (we fly a Firefly6 Pro, a DJI Matrice 600 Pro, and an Inspire 1 Pro)
    •     Familiarity with drone flying software, preferably with terrain awareness (we use Ground Station Pro, Maps Made Easy, Pix4D Capture, UGCS, and others)
    •     Familiarity with imagery processing and photogrammetry software (we use Pix4D)

    Archaeologist/Environmental Planner Position - Dokken Engineering (Folsom, California)  

    Dokken Engineering’s Environmental branch has an immediate opening for an Archaeologist/Environmental Planner to implement cultural resources management tasks as well as various other environmental planning tasks.  Dokken provides environmental, engineering, and construction support services for local, state, and federally funded projects including roads, bridges, highways, interchanges, trails, dams, and other public works facilities.

    Cultural Resource Specialist (Anchorage, AK) 



    This is a full-time regular position to provide cultural resources support, including a full spectrum of research, documentation, report preparation, public involvement, and agency coordination services to clients in the area of environmental documentation as required by the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA). The incumbent must have a Master’s Degree in anthropology, archeology, architectural history, history, or a closely related field with specialized training in CRM. They will deal with cultural resource identification and documentation; and carry out or assist in limited monitoring, survey, and testing cultural resource sites; lab work and managing of field data; and the production of small-scale reports. A Cultural Resource Specialist II should have a progressively responsible 2- to 5-year track as a CRM professional.


    Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

    ·          Perform background research of existing cultural resources data for projects.

    o     Documents research: Can demonstrate competency in the use of published and/or unpublished documentary data (field notes, collections, catalogs, historical, ethnohistorical and ethnographic data; environmental and paleoenvironmental data, etc.) as a basis for analysis. Must have (1) at least one year's experience in cultural resource research under the supervision of a professional; and (2) prepared at least one report, of at least the scope and quality of an M.A. thesis, that organizes a body of documentary data, and analyzes this body of data to reach predictions, conclusions, or interpretations.

    o     Historical Archaeology: Can document a minimum of one year of field and laboratory experience with sites and artifacts of an historical period, including six months of field work and eight weeks of laboratory work under the supervision of a professional historical archeologist.

    o     History: Incumbent must (1) demonstrate competence in primary archival research under the supervision of a competent specialist; and (2) prepared at least one report, of at least the scope and quality of an M.A. thesis, that organizes a body of archival data, and analyzes this body of data to reach predictions, conclusions, or interpretations.

    o     Architectural History: Can demonstrate professional experience evaluating historic buildings, structures and landscapes for NRHP eligibility and knowledge of federal, state and local cultural resource regulations as they apply to these resources.

    ·          Must be able to use Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Project software

    ·          The ability to travel and work in remote areas under adverse conditions for extended periods of time is required

    Geophysical Specialist

    New South Associates, Inc. – Greensboro, NC

    We are seeking a geophysical archaeologist in our Greensboro, North Carolina office. This entry level position is intended for a qualified individual who will be part of an archaeological geophysics team. They will join a fast paced and dynamic team of archaeologists performing geophysical surveys around the southeast.  The geophysical archaeology program at New South conducts a variety of projects throughout the Southeastern United States including cemetery surveys, large-scale prehistoric sites, historic sites, and everything in between.

    Candidates should show familiarity and some experience with near-surface geophysical field and processing methods (particularly magnetometer and ground-penetrating radar). Project assignments will involve directing field projects, processing and interpreting data, and preparing project reports.

    Minimum Qualifications

    ·       Master’s degree in anthropology or closely related field.

    ·       Familiarity and experience with near-surface geophysical instruments and data processing.

    ·       Basic ArcGIS skills

    ·       Basic mapping skills with GPS and total station and a willingness to learn

    ·       Good writing skills

    ·       Ability to travel (primarily within the southeast region)

    Desired Qualifications
